Certified Medical Administrative Assistant

The University of the Incarnate Word School of Professional Studies is offering an exciting opportunity for those interested in beginning a new career as a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA). The CMAA training course prepares students for the National Health Career Association exam and enter the field of healthcare. The program includes a well-blended mix of classroom, audio-visual presentation and a shadow experience (if eligible/available).

Medical administrative assistants have an expansive range of opportunities for employment. The skills learned through the NHA CMAA certification are essential to hospitals, physician offices, surgery centers, nursing homes, dental offices, home healthcare agencies, mental health facilities and even insurance companies and consulting firms.

We realize work, life and family obligations can sometimes prevent individuals from attaining educational opportunities. With that in mind, we have tailored the program to fit the busy schedules required by family life and work.

As a CMAA, job duties may include some or all of the following tasks:

  • Answer office telephones.
  • Greet patients and facilitate the check-in process.
  • Maintain medical records (updating, filing, etc.).
  • Complete and fill out insurance forms.
  • Handle office correspondence (e.g. mail and email).
  • Schedule patient appointments.
  • Coordinate hospital admissions and laboratory services.
  • Assist with billing and bookkeeping.
The CMAA program offers students both theoretical and practical training through hands-on experience. This program prepares students to take the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant examination through NHA.

Shadow Experience

In addition to 78 hours in the classroom and homework study time, students are eligible (if available) to complete a shadow experience which serves as working experience and a reference for future employment.
