He spent 24 years in the US Army as a pulmonary/critical care physician, retiring as Chairman, Department of Medicine at the Brooke Army Medical Center. He continues to practice as a hospitalist physician in San Antonio and teaches residents at the Brooke Army Medical Center and the Baptist Medical Center in San Antonio.
