Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist

UIW School of Professional Studies is offering an exciting opportunity for those interested in beginning a new career as a Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS).

A laptop next to a stethoscope The Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) training course will prepare you to successfully pass the National Healthcareer Association exam and directly enter the field of healthcare. The program includes a well-blended mix of classroom, audio-visual presentation and a shadow experience.

Electronic Health Records Specialists have an expansive range of opportunities for employment. The skills learned through the NHA CEHRS certification are essential to hospitals, physician offices, surgery centers, nursing homes, dental offices, home healthcare agencies, mental health facilities and even insurance companies and consulting firms.

Learn the following skills:

  • Audit patient records for compliance
  • Abstract clinical information for reports
  • Perform basic coding to submit reimbursement claims
  • Process Release of Information (ROI) requests for medical records
  • Review patient records to ensure completion and accuracy
  • Collect patient demographic and insurance information
  • Discuss patient information with physicians and insurance professionals

We realize work, life and family obligations can sometimes prevent you from attending educational opportunities. With that in mind, we have tailored the program to fit the busy schedules required by family life and work. The CEHRS program offers students both theoretical and practical training through hands-on experience. This program prepares you to take the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist examination through NHA.

Class Schedule

Classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m. for 12 weeks.

Shadow Experience

In addition to 72 hours in the classroom and homework study time, students are eligible to complete a shadow experience which serves as working experience and a reference for future employment.


To maintain a low teacher-student ratio seating is LIMITED. We will be accepting 20 applicants into this program. The course includes all live instruction, and all materials to include the CEHRS exam and a shadow experience to eligible students.
