You have started on a journey that will be rewarding and enlightening. The University of the Incarnate Word has stood for quality education for over 130 years. As you enter the School of Professional Studies (SPS), we welcome you as part of our community. We intend to help you grow on a personal level as well as a spiritual one. Make the most of this opportunity - the benefits are limitless.
It is our hope this orientation will answer many of the questions you may have. It should also give you more insight as to the expectations we have for our students. This orientation will take you some time to read through. Don’t ignore it or discard it. Use it as a reference when you have a question or a concern. An important point to remember - this is your degree and you are responsible for knowing what is contained in this document!
Let me welcome you to the University of the Incarnate Word and to the School of Professional Studies.
Vincent C. Porter, Dean
School of Professional Studies
The purpose of an orientation is:
To introduce you to the University of the Incarnate Word and the School of Professional Studies
Information in this orientation comes from the UIW Bulletin and other manuals and/or handbooks. This orientation is only a brief guide to get you started. Become familiar with the Bulletin and Handbook because they contain information you are responsible for knowing.
The UIW Bulletin in effect at the time of your acceptance into the University contains the requirements you will need to fulfill so you can graduate. Although your academic advisor can help you choose courses, you are ultimately responsible for meeting the requirements of your specific degree program under your bulletin. Please address any questions or concerns early in your academic career.
After reading this orientation you will be required to take a short exam. You must take the exam and submit it to receive a valid UIW Student ID. Not having a valid UIW ID card can and will prohibit you from using many of the benefits offered to UIW and SPS students.
