Department of Education Compliance
Adult education is very important to the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) and in particular to our Division of Extended Academic Programs (EAP). EAP houses the School of Extended Studies including the Adult Degree Completion Program (ADCaP). We have a large number of students who take part in the School of Extended Studies and in ADCaP. The Higher Education Act of 1965 includes regulation for State Authorization that has an impact on the way we do our jobs to ensure a quality educational experience for our students.
If an institution is offering post-secondary education through distance or correspondence education to students in a State in which it is not physically located or in which it is otherwise subject to State jurisdiction as determined by the State, the institution must meet any State requirements for it to be legally offering post-secondary distance or correspondence education in that State. An institution must be able to document to the Secretary the State's approval upon request. (Authority: 20 U.S.C. 1001 and 1002)
We are working to comply with all current and new regulations. While in the early stages, we have reviewed the state requirements for licensing, have a process in place to respond, and have hired a director of assessment and accreditation to work to follow all state guidelines as well as to keep licensing up-to-date.
In compliance with the language passed in the Higher Education Opportunities Act of 2008, the U.S. Department of Education has mandated that institutions must provide enrolled and prospective students with contact information for filing complaints with its accrediting agency and with the appropriate state agency for handling complaints in the student's state. Below is information on UIW’s accreditation agency, followed by a state-by-state which lists the agencies in each state responsible for complaints regarding out-of-state distance education programs. We hope that your first path will be to contact the School of Extended Studies in order to allow us to help you before you move to an outside agency.
The University of the Incarnate Word is regionally accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The commission may be contacted at:
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
1866 Southern Lane
Decatur, Georgia 30033
These new regulations require us to provide prospective and current students with contact information for filing complaints with the appropriate agency in the state where the student resides.
